Songboard

At Gilt Edge Plastics Limited we are always excited to receive new innovative projects, so when we were approached by a design company to injection mould plastic spheres for their Songboard project naturally we were delighted to help. With our expertise in plastic injection moulding and with 24 hr production, we were able to work alongside our experienced toolmaker to produce the spheres in a limited timeframe in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Songboard was produced as a temporary attraction for the City of London during the Olympic and Paralympic Games and is based at Kings Cross Station from 24th July – 9th September and then at the D & AD Awards on 18th September 2012. Songboard is a multi-sensory interactive installation measuring 35 metres long, containing a dot matrix of thousands of yellow and black plastic injection moulded spheres which, when turned, enable users to create their own patterns, signs, messages and sounds that form recognisable melodies. For weeks now Songboard has been providing a visually captivating and entertaining feature for passers by at Kings Cross. Members of the public have been fascinated by Songboard and Gilt Edge Plastics have been proud to be part of its production. Images can be seen at http://www.songboardlondon.com/images.html

Help With Your Material Choice

It is vital that the correct material is selected for your project. The composition of the material, its mechanical characteristics, moulding properties and obviously cost all need to be taken into consideration. With our expertise and knowledge we are able to give sound advice in respect of material choice. Just call to speak to Mike Franklin, Managing Director, or Kevin Stanford, Production Manager.

How Would We Proceed With Your Project?

Initially we would produce a 3D drawing of your proposed product for you if you have not already got one. If you are happy with the design we could get an SLA* model made so that you can actually try the product. Providing the SLA is satisfactory to you we would initiate tooling production. After the tool is complete we would sample the mould and check the mouldings for size, colour, function etc. If necessary we would then make any tooling adjustments required and then re-sample. Once you are satisfied that the sample meets your exact requirements we would proceed to manufacture your product. *Stereolithography/SLAs are used in the research and design stages of a product. This is a rapid way to produce one part and takes approximately 1-3 days. SLAs can subsequently be used for conformity of fit, size, and function. Contact us now to see how we can help you.

Insert Staking

What is Insert Staking? ...... Using thermal probes, brass or metal inserts are inserted into cavities moulded into the component. Heat from the probe transfers through the insert and melts the plastic surrounding the insert so the insert becomes embedded in the component. This process can be used on a variety of products including fasteners, hinge plates, pivots and hubs to name but a few. This is another of the many services Gilt Edge Plastics are able to provide to customers. Contact us for specialist advice.

Pad Printing

Pad printing is a form of printing that can transfer a 2-D image onto a 3-D object. Initially an image is etched into a flat printing plate and ink is then poured into the etch. A flexible silicone rubber pad picks up a film of ink from the plate and transfers it to the three dimensional part surface. Throughout this process the ink becomes tacky as solvent evaporates from the ink. The flexible silicone pad is able to pick up the image from the flat plate and transfer it to many surface shapes – e.g. concave, convex spherical and cylindrical. By applying pressure the pad conforms to the surface shape and leaves the desired image on the object. This form of printing can be used on products including electronic components, sports equipment, toys, automobile parts, medical equipment and many others. This is another of the many services we are able to provide to our customers. Contact us for help with your project.

Hot Foil Printing

Hot foil printing is a highly effective and appealing way of printing designs, text and graphics onto moulded parts using a heated die and coloured foil but without the use of ink thereby eliminating drying times. This effect can be produced using a wide variety of foil materials such as holographic, metallic, gloss and matt colours. The die comes into contact with the foil and places a thing layer of the foil onto the moulding. When heat is added the foil adheres to the object leaving the required design. At Gilt Edge we are able to offer this service to our customers. Contact us for more information.
